From studying law and waiting tables in his native city of Graz, Austria back in 2008, Andreas Gabalier has become the fastest rising star on the European popular music scene over the past five years. Today hardly a day passes when his name is not prominently mentioned in the press, on radio or TV. He was even voted the fourth most influential Austrian in a public opinion poll...well ahead of Arnold Schwarzenegger! From his earliest recordings in 2009 to now, Andreas Gabalier has expanded his style and audience to embrace fans of folk (including popular folk), rock, country. rock'n roll and given us his own synthesis of musical styles, which he proudly calls "Volks Rock'N Roll." His sell-out arena tour of Austria in the spring of 2012 is the source of this CD which was also available in Europe with a fabulous DVD. It was his final show of the tour at Vienna's normally staid Stadthalle (City Hall) and displayed his wide and far-reaching repertoire of sell-penned songs, ranging from heavy hitting hits like "I Sing A Liad Fuer Di" (I Sing A Song For You) to amazing ballads, done here with accoustic backing. His band is extraordinarily tight and competent and Gabalier's self-effacing style shows a modesty and joy seldom seen in popular stars today. This is not only an excellent introduction to Gabalier, but also a triumph of live performance. Too bad Gabalier was singing only in German (and his Austrian dialect at that!) as he has more recently expanded his repertoire to include songs in English. He has a new live set from his autumn 2013 German tour (recorded in Munich) that has just appeared, which will surely build on what this show has to offer. There can be little doubt that the 29-year-old Volks Rock'N Roller is set to reach even greater heights in the years to come!
